Christmas in Vienna

Where to get into the festive spirit and where to find the best "Punsch" in town

When the days are getting colder and darker Vienna actually gets more and more beautiful every day! Every corner in this city starts sparkling. Have you ever been there around Christmas? No? Then put it on your bucketlist, cause Vienna with its imperial architecture is a perfect match with this time of the year.

If you managed to be in town around Xmas, here is the good news: Vienna offers a variety of beautiful Christmas markets worth visiting. From lavish "Christkindlmarkets" in the first district at the Wiener Rathausplatz (in front of Town Hall), Stephansplatz (around the cathedral), "Freyung" or "Am Hof" to the magnificent one in front of Schönbrunn Palace and artsy or trendy Punch places in the 4th or 7th districts.

Wiener Rathausplatz

The Christmas market at the Wiener Rathausplatz is for sure the most classic one. And with its beautiful lights, like the famous so called “Herzerl-Baum”, and the possibility to ice skate there, adults as well as kids will be happy.

Schönbrunn

If you love Vienna because of its imperial flair then you will be a fan of Schönbrunn. Where Empress Sisi once lived there is also one of Viennas most beautiful Christmas markets. Located in the thirteenth district called “Hietzing” you find wonderful decorated booths which offer traditional handicrafts, nostalgic toys and lovingly designed Christmas decorations made of glass, wood, ceramics, paper and tin.

Karlsplatz

After the two historical important Christmas markets we also wanna introduce you to a more artsy one, the Art Advent at the Karlsplatz, on the border of the first and fourth districts of Vienna. 2018 Art Advent celebrates its 25th birthday. The craftspeople of divina art have focused on quality for a quarter of a century: exceptional craftwork, organic catering and a big entertainment programme with workshops, fire shows and Live acts.

Favourhoods favourite

Beside the above mentioned grand Christmas markets there is no Viennese district that has more to offer than the 7th District “Neubau”. If you think more in the spirit of Christmas and its meaning and prefer it cozier and not that touristic you wanna visit Spittelberg. Its the most romantic market of all. And although not very big we could spend hours in the charming Biedermeier lanes of Vienna‘s former suburb. Check also the Cafe “Amerlingbeisl” within the Spittelberg and its lovely courtyard, where you can find the best Punsch and Glühwein in town.

If you like it more trendy: Visit the MQ (MuseumsQuartier Wien), only 2 Minutes away from the Weihnachtsdorf Maria Theresien Platz, or one of the winter terraces of Viennas best hotels and bars like Ritz-Carlton or Klyo.
